The following persons have been involved as Leaders, Deputy Leaders or Observers
at these Olympiads:-
- Professor Tom Laffey (UCD)
- Professor Finbarr Holland (UCC)
- Dr Fergus Gaines (UCD)
- Dr Kevin Hutchinson (UCD)
- Dr Donal Hurley (UCC)

- Dr Rachel Quinlan (UCD)
The following questions proposed by Ireland have been chosen for the IMO.
- 1988 Question 4
Prove that the set of solutions of the inequality
\sum_{k=1}^{k=70} \frac{k}{x-k} \geq \frac{5}{4}
is the union of non-intersecting intervals whose lengths have sum equal to
1988.
- 1993 Question 1
Let f(x) = x^n +5x^(n-1)+3 where n>1 is an integer.
Prove that f(x) cannot be expressed as the product of two polynomials, each
of which has all its coefficients integers and degree at least 1.
The 39th International Mathematical Olympiad was held in
Taiwan from July 10-21st 1998. A bronze medal was won by Raja Mukherji,
only the third Irish person to win a medal at the IMO. The previous winners were
Andrew McMurry and Kevin McGerty.
Angus Rodgers from the Royal Belfast Academic Institute won a Bronze medal in
1971 representing the United Kingdom. The 1998 team received sponsorship
from Deloitte and Touche .
The 1999 International Mathematical Olympiad was held in Bucharest, Romania from Saturday 10th
July to Thursday 22nd July. Raja Mukherji won a Bronze medal for the second successive year. Raja is the first Irish
student to participate in three Olympiads and the first to win two medals. Raja also participated in the International
Chemistry Olympiad in Thailand immediately prior to going to Romania, where he won a Silver medal.
Marty O'Leary won a Bronze medal at the 42nd International Mathematical Olympiad in Washington DC in July 2001.
This is the 5th Bronze medal won by an Irish student following Andrew McMurry (1990), Kevin McGerty (1993) and Raja Mukherji
(1998 and 1999).

Interesting news item: Two of the mathematicians awarded Fields Medals at the International
Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin this year were former Olympiad students. Richard Borcherds
won a Silver medal in 1977 and a Gold Medal in 1978. Tim Gowers won a Gold Medal in 1981.
