ASSESS This is the independent, European, SPSS, users group - see spssusers.co.uk for more details. The group is run by a Committee of which I have been a member since 2004. The Committee organises an annual conference and technical workshops
SPSS Is a major statistical package which has been around since c1968. Like many vintage packages it has many strengths and
weaknesses. Since its expensive move to the MS Windows platform SPSS has concentrated on commerical, rather than technical statistical, considerations. This development weakness, coupled with legacy code problems -
the reluctance to modernise old procedures - has meant that the package, which was avant garde in the 1970’s, had rather fallen behind other products..
R-Project Recently the situation has been improved with the advent of SPSS V16 which
supports the integration of the R package. This is a major advance since it
removes - at a stroke - the technical deficiencies which had developed and affords the SPSS user the ability to integrate R
code and access the extensive technical statistical libraries which exist for R .
TALKS Over the course of several years I have been invited by ASSESS to give some talks at their annual conference
highlighting the problems with a view to encouraging SPSS to modernise the package. The talks are reproduced below as Powerpoint presentations
