Some Mathematical Models for Drug Delivery from Polymeric Devices

Many issues arising in drug delivery lend themselves naturally to mathematical analysis. For example, how much drug should be delivered, how frequently should it be administered, and where and how it should be delivered? In this talk, we discuss the value of mathematical modelling in the design and operation of some drug delivery devices. In particular, we shall consider a number of polymer-based drug delivery systems, and how they may be described mathematically. The models arising are mostly either diffusive or reactive-diffusive in character. Emphasis will be placed on simple analytical insights and on how useful qualitative information may be extracted from the models.
